The Central Canadian Hockey League is pleased to announce that six players from five different member teams will be representing Team East at the fifth annual Canadian Junior Hockey League Prospects Game in Winkler, Manitoba from December 7th through to December 9th.
Roster selections are based largely on input from NHL Central Scouting in an effort to showcase the top forty draft eligible prospects in Junior A hockey across Canada.
The St. Michael's Buzzers will send a pair of players - Jesse Beamish, a 1992 born forward in his second season with the team who has committed to play for the Dartmouth College Big Green beginning in either 2010 or 2011 and Lucas Lessio, a 1993 born forward in his rookie season who has committed to play for the University of Michigan Wolverines beginning in 2011.
Joining them will be four defensemen, Julian Melchiori from the Newmarket Hurricanes, a 1991 born player who is in his second season with the team and has committed to play for the University of Massachusetts-Lowell beginning in 2010; Nick Quinn, a 1992 born player who is in his first season with the team and has committed to play for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute beginning in 2010; Justin Baker, a 1991 born player who is in his third season with the team and has committed to play for St. Lawrence University beginning in 2010 and Jordan Mustard from the Markham Waxers, a 1991 born player who is in his third season with the team and has committed to play for the Canisius College Griffins beginning in 2010.
Justin Baker has been an offensive force from the blueline for the Streetsville Derbys scoring one hundred and forty three points in ninety nine games since breaking in at the Junior A level during the 2007/2008 season. After hearing of his inclusion in the CJHL prospects game, Baker explained that he was thrilled to have the chance to compete against some of the other top Junior A players in Canada.
"It's definitely a huge honour because that's what I've always dreamed of: to be recognized by people who do scouting at the NHL Central Scouting level," said Baker, the Captain of the 2009/2010 Derbys. "Hopefully I make the most of this opportunity and do the best for myself personally. This is a really exciting opportunity and I'm really happy that I was chosen."
In his third season with the Derbys, Baker has taken his game to another level, scoring eleven goals and thirty four assists in twenty seven games and has been a force on the power play with sixteen of those points coming with the man advantage. His plus thirteen rating though indicates that Baker has found away to contribute offensively as a defenseman without sacrificing his responsibilities in his own zone.
"I would definitely say it's reading the play in the neutral zone because a lot of my points tend to come from intercepting passes in the neutral zone and catching teams in odd man rushes going the other way," explained Baker, regarding the style of play that allows him to put up big numbers offensively. "I'd also say that the power play is a big part of my game. I've always been a power play player and my skills on the power play have developed over the years."
